AFTER MONTHS OF PURCHASING THE MINI SAW AND WOOD

I finally got down to business! And when I say business, I totally meant sawing my initials TW to put them up on the walls just like any other typical (vain) person's room. But in my case, if you don't already know, I love hands-on / practical activity. Buying pre-carved letters from the store doesn't cut it for me. Actually making them and being involved in the process was more fun as usual. Besides, buying pre-made ones means you and someone one else... or probably a thousand others... have the same kind.

Now, I use a stencil for my initials and I drew them on the wood a few months back and finally got the time to do this. Also, it's one of my 2012 resoultion to finish this up! I've forgotten what font I use but it's similar to the ol' Times New Roman for the typical "I have my initials / name on my wall" look. It was my first wood carving-ish project so I stuck to the basics... instead of fancy fonts which would have killed me; it would take weeks for me to finish it then! Okay, yes — many pre-made ones uses Times New Roman but I bet they look so sleek and polished, every letter would look like a duplicate of one another. Mine on the other hand, being my first time, it looks rather rugged which was actually what I was aiming for because I love homemade crafts / goods!

This post is sort of a DIY but more of a compilation of my project. This highlighted symbol > shows a short DIY / tutorial of this project. Enjoy!

DAY #1:

> 1. Draw your initials / your name / your design on the wood with pencil and saw them out! It took a few practice with me but once you got your angle and position right, you're good to go and will have your project done in no time.

I was pretty excited that I cut off the first chunk of wood from the plank so I had to take a picture. Ha! For retarded reasons, the plank wasn't "solid"; rather two pieces of wood joined together to create one plank. So while sawing my initials, they broke into several pieces. That just meant more work → I had to combine it and > be careful not to loose any tiny wood splinters which are like pieces to the puzzle.

It took me two days to finish sawing those two initials — either because 1. I was tired so I had to drag the job to two days or #2. It really needed two days to be done... which I actually doubt so. I got ¾ of the "T" done on Day #1 and the rest of it together with the W + filing and binding it together on Day #2. My dad helped me to saw the "T" a little which makes ¾ of the "T" done and for me to continue on the rest; He also said I use the blade wrongly lol :(

DAY #2:

Day 2 was much easier knowing the blade was correctly put to use and also the angle of my arm. Notice how the initials are separated (because of how the wood was made)? So I used Dunlop's contact adhesive aka glue to bind them together. I got help from me dad (lol how Irish!) for letter "T" too and got the "W" done myself. But before all that, filing is crucial! Out of the 6 pocket-size files my dad has, I only use 3 of them. And I know it's pretty obvious to say this but filing is much easier than sawing. Look at my hands after filing!

> 2. Take a file (Surely your dad has it around the house somewhere?) and "scrub" of the bristled / splintered ends of your project.
   3. Slap on some glue and let it dry; then carefully stick them together! This step is optional because it depends whether or not the plank that you have is like mine or you broke your project whilst sawing.

Voilà!

DAY #3:

Now to dress them up. My initial idea was to paint them, but then again that seemed pretty typical so I've decided on decorating the front with fabric. It took me awhile to choose a fabric and with such limited fabric that I have, I didn't really have much of choices. But floral prints anything is pretty so picked up the floral print fabric and started working on it.

> 4. Pick any fabric that you like but also one that will suit your room colour or the place where you're hanging this up. Draw an outline of your project on the reverse-side of the fabric with the front of your project face down. If you don't want to use fabric, just paint them with any poster colour.
  5. Once you're done, take some white glue and slap them on your project with a brush; be generous with the glue! Then, carefully place the fabric on and flatten them — we don't want them to be placed more to one side!

> 6. Right after you've done that, no reason to wait. Just get your hairdryer and heat them to make the glue "set". Pay more attention to the small corners of your project.

And of course nobody's perfect. I really tried to draw a best fit on the fabric for my letters but somehow they stuck out a some places! It's so annoying. But, no worry. > 7. Unless the fabric on your project came our perfect (boo me), cut off all the excess fabric sticking out of your project.

And I'm finally done at Day 3, 7:00PM! Consider (most of ) my 2012 resolutions done! But I'm actually deciding on whether or not I should colour the sides either brown or dark green. I sat and thought and couldn't come up with a decision so I left it as it is  wood! It looks more crafty this way, doesn't it?

Me Mom asked why I didn't cut out the whole T R A C Y letters and I told her... why don't you saw them out for me? Hahaha.

This is my last post and resolution of 2012! Till next year!
